Clinical Evaluation of Serum Theophylline Concentration after Aminophylline Administration in Children

Abstract
Theophylline has gained an increasing role in the management of patients with bronchospasm and currently it is regarded by many physicians as the drug of choice in therapy for acute exacerbation¡¯s of asthma.
The purpose of this study was the determination of optimal dosage of theophylline that produce therapeutic effect with little or no adverse effects in children.
Authors measured the levels of serum theophylline in 38 patients (20 asthma, 18 pneumonia) who had been administered to Department of Pediatrics, Yong San Hospital, Chung-Ang University from January, 1986 to June, 1986.
The results are as follows:
1) Mean serum concentrations of theophylline in A group(9 patients) who were given 12 mg/kg/day orally was 5.90¡¾3.27¥ìg/ml, B group (22 patients) who were given 15 mg/kg/ day orally was 7.04¡¾3.75 ¥ìg/ml and C group(7 patients) who were given 20 mg/kg/day intravenously was 8.91¡¾3.39 ¥ìg/ml.
2) Asthma patients showed therapeutic response in the serum concentrations above 7.2 ¥ìg/ml. 3) Six patients showed side effects which were nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
